Identifying Raccoon Poop (Feces)

Identifying raccoon poop from different animals can be difficult to the untrained eye. Raccoons will eat literally ANYTHING and that will change the consistency of their feces. If they are primary eating berries and woodland food, it will look different then if they are scavenging your trashcans for left over McDonald’s. Regardless of what they eat, they size will be the same as an small/medium size dog, and about 3+4 inches in length.

Diseases Caused By Raccoon Poop

All of these diseases can be transmitted to you and especially your pets. If your dog is outside he can very easily stumble upon raccoon poop and have it transmitted to him, it can be fatal.

Important components of reducing the potential of disease are
  1. Inspection. Inspect to ensure that nothing that may cause disease problems exists on your property or inside your home. Look for the presence of raccoon latrines in and around your attic, garage and outside storage buildings. You might be more likely to find raccoon latrines or dead raccoons if you live close to a nature preserve, wooded park or another forested location.
  2. Removal. This effort requires discarding live or dead raccoons, feces, contaminated insulation or any other surface that was in contact with raccoon feces and urine. NEVER ATTEMPT REMOVAL WITHOUT USING THE PROPER PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT. Otherwise improper removal may actually cause more potential for disease problems than it solves.
